Everybody knows that Brooklyn is where it’s at right now! Williamsburg, DUMBO, Red Hook, Smith Street. But not too many people have ventured down to lower Atlantic Avenue to the famous sailor haunt Montero’s.
My Dad a career Navy man said that Montero’s has been a well-known watering hole for “Swabbies” for decades since the era of “On the Waterfront” – Starring Marlon Brando. A true drinking bar, this is not the place to find drinks with funny names shaken into pastel colors. But hard drinks for people who wanna get drunk fast!!
I was fortunate enough to be there on a Saturday Night where my sources informed me that Amethyst will be showing up with a Kareoke machine sometime around 10PM.
I met three “Singer-Ringers” that convinced me to do a couple of standard numbers. Which I was totally into. Being the closet performer that I am! 🙂
I also had the “Honor” of taking a special request from Miss Carol who is one of the regulars. When she said it was a Whitney Houston song I almost declined. But when she told me it was her 1st husband’s favorite song. Then how can you turn that down!
I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. But when I turned away from the tele-prompter to sing her a few lines. I noticed that she was getting very emotional. I had struck a cord!
With tears in her eyes, she thanked me and I realized that we both had gotten something out of this performance!
I can’t guarantee that you’ll have the same experience. But if you find yourself on Atlantic on a late Saturday night, then stop into Montero’s and don’t forget to buy Carol a drink!!
PBR $4 – Jamesons $6 – Closing down Montero’s to Carol singing “Fever” , PRICELESS!!
